Many can agree – there is nothing quite like biting into a deliciously ripe red tomato sandwiched between two slices of bread. Nor can any grocery store replicate the incredible taste of farm-fresh eggs that local hens have laid. Not to mention all of the fresh produce, meat, and cheese that only a local farm can do. In Sussex County, we are very lucky because we have a plethora of farms that produce all of these things and more! We’re sharing the best farms in the county with you; keep reading to find your next favorite farm-fresh meal!

 

The Farm at Windy Flats

The Farm at Windy Flats, located in Wantage, offers up delicious fresh farm-raised beef, where they are said to create some of the tastiest burgers around. They also have eggs for sale. You can literally buy your steak and eggs at the same farm!

Vernon Valley Farm

At Vernon Valley Farm, you are going to find some incredible meats, including pastured pork, pastured poultry, and grass-fed beef. They grow well over 50 different types of fresh vegetables, according to what’s in season. They are also a farm with a history, as it has been in the same family since 1836. Visit the farm, and talk about the history! If you’d like to talk about how their meat is fed or how the produce is grown, they are happy to talk to everyone about that, too!

Churutabis Farm

Nestled in the heart of Frankford, Churutabis Farm is committed to giving the community a chance to purchase farm-fresh eggs, which are raised on a healthy diet of grass, grains, and bugs. Because of this diverse diet, the eggs they produce are very high in protein. They also offer broilers and turkeys; they are dedicated to sustainable farming, with their animals not being given any antibiotics, just a tasty diet off the land. Ideal Farm and Garden

Ideal Farm and Garden has been in operation since 1910. Talk about a legacy! Three generations have owned the farm; it all began when its original owner started selling extra milk from the family’s dairy cow in Paterson, NJ. The operation grew to over 200 acres in Sussex County where they sell chicken, duck, goose, and turkey eggs, and a large variety of seasonal vegetables. Plus, you can stop in at their location in Lafayette to grab some freshly baked artisan bread, pickles, salsas, and even ice cream!

Hillcrest Orchard & Dairy

Hillcrest Orchard and Dairy is the home of the famous Jersey Girl Cheese! Their primary crop is growing apples in the fall for u-pick adventures, featuring a beautiful hayride up to the orchard. However, if you are looking for beef, they sell that as well. In the fall, one of the experiences you can have is visiting their farm store for some of the tastiest apple cider donuts. Of course you can purchase fresh and delicious cheeses from Jersey Girl Cheese – handcrafted cheeses created by cheesemakers straight from Italy. Nestled right in Branchville, it’s a fantastic farm to bring your family to!

Farmside Garden and Florist

Right in Sussex, Farmside Garden and Florist has been a favorite for many a gardener over the past 40 years. They have the largest selection of plants in this region, which can make for a fun and colorful garden. They have over a hundred different varieties of plants, that include annuals, perennials, herbs, shrubs, and trees. Plus, they sell a variety of landscaping supplies to give your garden that perfect touch. You can truly find everything to create your dream garden in this center. Right next door is their florist, who has created some of the most stunning bouquets from local, in-season flowers.

Cerbo’s Nurseries

Back in 1913, Antonio Cerbo Sr arrived in America, Parsippany to be exact. His humble beginnings began at a roadside farmstand that he ran. Soon, his vision of having a farm of his own would come true, and in 1913 it formally grew. The Hampton Nursery is located in Branchville, just a small ride up the road from Hampton. They are actually the largest producers of shade, evergreen and ornamental trees. Plus, they raise nursery stock, plants native to the region, and tree production. They do have three different locations. One in Parsippany, The Tree Farm, and The Hampton Nursery.

Layton Hay and Produce Company

We can all agree that there is nothing quite like biting into an ear of sweet corn, especially that first bite of the summer – one of the best seasonal treats! At Layton Hay and Produce Company, they grow a variety of produce that can include cantaloupes, watermelons, and pumpkins, and there are plenty of beautiful flowers there to choose from in all different colors to create the bouquet of your dreams!

Cattail Hollow Farm

Located right in Lafayette, past the Shoppes at Lafayette on top of the hill, sits a farm, Cattail Hollow Farm, to be exact. Two young farmers, Meg and Kim started the farm last year with the intent of feeding their friends good and wholesome foods. They offer chicken, duck, and guinea eggs, and their chickens spend all day outside, grazing on their favorite grasses and eating bugs, so their diet is varied. They grow delicious vegetables like radish, kale, rainbow chard, and more. Various times of the year, they hold workshops on different topics like learning how to house chickens and wreath making at Christmas.

Dreamscape Acres

If you’re looking for a fun farm-time adventure, you need not look any further than Dreamscape Acres in Franklin. They grow in-season vegetables that are available for purchase. But the best part about this wonderful farm is the Educational Encounters both children and adults alike can have with the farm’s own sheep and goats! You can visit them at the farm, or they will even bring them to your event! They are a sustainable farm and continue to give back to the land. There are so many incredible things that you can do here – they even host Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, church groups, and more. Plus, they have times when you can learn all about baby goats and sheep – who doesn’t love babies? Wesselhof Farms + Marketplace

Family-owned and operated, Wesselhof Farms has been growing produce in a sustainable and organic way, so you know that you are only getting the best. The farm is located off Sunset Inn Road in Lafayette. Their philosophy for growing their Hereford cattle and broiler chickens is always to treat the animals with respect. The animals are given organic grass to munch on while they grow, and they are free to roam around the farm. 

We’d be remiss if we didn’t share about Wesselhof’s lovely modern cafe on the property. Anyone can stop in for a coffee, a delicious bakery treat, a delectable sit-down meal, or grab some of their take-home items to whip up in your own kitchen.

R&M Farms

Located in Wantage, R&M Farms offers a variety of piglets that one can grow for their own meat. In addition to that, they also offer beef and chicken and you can even buy specific cuts of meat. They are part of a year-round Community Supported Agriculture program, so you can continually get meat delivered to your house when you need it.

Green Valley Farms

Located in Wantage, Green Valley Farms has over 200 acres of farmland – all currently being used. They have a simple rule when it comes to farming: respect the land and the animals. They grow all kinds of vegetables, including pumpkins, strawberries, blueberries, tomatoes, peaches, and so much more – even fresh-cut flowers to brighten up your space! In addition to vegetables, they also sell preserves, freshly baked goods, and eggs straight from their free-range chickens. If you’re looking to purchase meat, they sell that too. Fresh Pickins

Right on Route 206 in Sandyston, Fresh Pickins is a fresh produce market with a lot to offer. They sell fresh seasonal produce in their store. You can find everything from home decor to homemade honey. They also create handmade artisanal bread and offer artisanal cheeses – definitely worth a stop in their store to say hi!

Catalpa Ridge Farm

Beginning in 1984 with the purchase of land in Wantage, NJ, Susan & Richard Sisti took ten years to turn their land into a modest but sizeable farm. They are fully a CSA– meaning that their harvests go directly to those who are signed up with that program. All of their seeds are non-GMO and you can even order plants online – here’s a link to their store. You can also find them at various festivals and markets throughout the year.

Clove Acres Farm

Located in Sussex, at Clove Acres Farm you can enjoy pasture-raised beef that grazes on a rotational basis, meaning they move from pasture to pasture. They do the same thing with their chickens to make sure they have a clean, healthy, and lush spot to munch on their favorite bugs and greens. Their pastured pork forages for their own food on the land. In turn, we get to reap the delicious benefits of these farmers! Windy Brow Farms

Windy Brow Farms was originally a dairy farm in the latter part of the 1800s, with the Inslee family planting fruit trees in 1920. Sadly, the dairy barn burned down, but the family concentrated on producing high-quality fruit and was one of the first families in the county to have a retail fruit farm. Today, they grow over 40 different kinds of apples and 15 varieties of other fruiting trees, including peaches, cherries, plums, nectarines, and apricots. Visit their farm store to find fresh-baked pies, pastries, and more. Even their grain is sourced locally. They often have specialty items that you can pre-order. But, one stop you have to make is to their ice cream window. They have the regular flavors of ice cream and favorite seasonal ones too. Tranquility Farms

Right in Andover, Tranquility Farms is a family-favorite farm, especially in the autumn, with their huge selection of seasonal food and the sheer amount of activities that they have. They have delicious produce and vegetables for every season, not to mention delicious homemade ice cream. They are even offering a market-style CSA for members – a 13-week program where you can grab some of their delectable pork and beef – all antibiotic free. You can order straight from their website, or you can grab some at their farmer’s market!

Andersen Farms

Andersen Farms has three locations where you can pick up some tasty farm fresh produce; there is Sparta, Sussex, and Andover. They do offer a CSA, lovingly called Farm in a Box. Each week, you can get a box of their most luscious cuts of meat, farm-fresh produce, and locally produced items that they’d like for you to try. They also have ice cream that’s hand-made by the farmer’s wife and her best friend. Definitely stop by one of their three stands to grab some produce and even a little treat!
