PRESS RELEASE

July 9, 2024

Route 23 northbound to be closed beginning tomorrow as a slope reinforcement project begins in Sussex County

Alternating traffic to be maintained using temporary signals

(Trenton) – Route 23 northbound is scheduled to be closed tomorrow at mile post 45.2 as a slope reinforcement project begins in Wantage, Sussex County. From 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, the travel lane and shoulder on Route 23 northbound are scheduled to be closed north of CR 519 at milepost 42.5. The closures are necessary to install temporary traffic signals, place construction barrier, and create a work zone in the Route 23 northbound lane and shoulder. Alternating traffic will be maintained during construction, which is expected to be completed in fall 2024. Motorists are advised to slow down, use caution, and expect delays while driving through the work zone.

The $13.1 million state-funded project will clean and rehabilitate stormwater facilities in various locations across Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Union, and Warren counties.

Variable Message Signs will provide advance notification to motorists of traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.

Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on X (Twitter) @NewJerseyDOT and on the NJDOT Facebook page.
