Scouts of Crew 629-I-04, from Newton and Sparta, are soon departing to travel to Philmont Scout Ranch. Philmont is a national high adventure base in Cimarron New Mexico where the crew will spend 10 days backpacking in the wilderness. They have trained for this trip for over a year. Training has included: hikes on the Appalachian trail, hanging bear bags, cooking, map reading, wilderness first aid and other skills they will use in the backcountry. While at Philmont the scouts chose activities to do such as blacksmithing, 30.06 shooting, spar pole climbing, touring and panning for gold, and will summit several mountain peaks.
