High Point State Park

High Point State Park

One of Sussex County’s most amazing and touching monuments is the High Point State Park & New Jersey Veterans’ Memorial. It is incredibly majestic and humbling to stand up and look at a monument honoring those who have fought for our country. It is also the highest point in New Jersey, coming in at 1,804 feet. Here are the fun things that you can do at the park.

The Monument

Nothing compares to the views from the top of the monument, which is approximately 220 feet high. There are 291 stairs to climb to ascend to the top, where you will find breathtaking views of the Catskill Mountains, the Pocono Mountains, and the Wallkill River. From there you can see three different states at once. At the base of the monument, there are viewfinders where you can view the land up close. Climbing the monument is subject to factors like weather and staffing, so it is a good idea to check and see if it is open before you go.

Hiking
Hiking trails abound at High Point. There are approximately 18 miles of trail through Kittatinny Ridge that runs through the park. Other trails vary in length from one half-mile to 4.4-miles. Different trails are used for different activities. There are walking trails, biking trails, cross-country skiing trails, and even horseback riding trails. When you hike along the trails in the park, you are bound to see all the incredible flora and fauna that find refuge there and call it home.

Swimming
During the summer months, when lifeguards are on duty, swimming is permitted in the nice cool waters of Lake Marcia. The spring-fed lake is 20 acres total and has a beach for sunbathing. Adjacent to the beach are the changing rooms and a concession stand where snacks and drinks can be purchased. The stand only takes cash, and there is no ATM on site. Ball-playing on the beach is allowed in certain areas. The lake typically opens in June.

Picnics
A favorite for picnics, High Point offers various points to sit down and have a bite. Picnic benches are available throughout the park, along with charcoal barbecues to cook on. If you are looking to have a large number of people picnicking with you, pavilions with overhead covers can be reserved for a nominal fee.

There is no shortage of activities to do at High Point State Park & New Jersey Veterans’ Memorial. One can easily spend a whole day exploring the park and what it has to offer!
